Dates: 1853-1865

Number of records in this collection: 4

The Birmingham Catholic Association was formed 'to bring the Catholics of Birmingham into more cordial union with each other and to watch over the interests of the Catholic body'. It sought to defend and promote Catholic interests in the city of Birmingham and in the country as a whole by proposing petitions to Parliament, to be signed by all the leading Catholics, against proposed anti-Catholic legislation. Membership of the Association was by election and subscription, and its quarterly meetings were largely of a social nature, the main business being conducted in the meetings of the Committee, which reported its activities at the Annual Meeting. The Association supported the other Catholic organisations and events in Birmingham, such as the Birmingham Catholic Reunion and the Poor Schools' Committee, and was active in raising subscriptions for a Catholic Reformatory.
